back from my five-day sojourn in west texas. 103 degree heat, humidity < 7%. fried food index approximately 5.5 {where FFI x 10 yields percentage of total food consumed in fried form}.
we watched a lot of movies on cable and lounged around playing with various cats. saw a prairie dog poke its head out of the dry, yellowed soil. at night we would visit k's friends from school. we went to a's house two nights, it is reached on several roads that are all dead straight, some of them unpaved. met the people from all of his stories, and watched them play poker one night with bullets and pinto beans for poker chips. was apologized to for one wop joke (which hadn't offended me in the first place) and could not enter a room without being offered a chair. laughed myself silly with friendly strangers. spent some educational time in a dark barn at three AM. played with a silky-eared black puppy, the last of the litter that was three days old when i last saw them. held a baby and made it smile. had my knees licked by a pug named phoebe and a bearded chihuahua named stink. had homemade chocolate ice cream for my birthday and nearly cried when i read the card his mother gave me. felt loved, in general.
