  • huge treasure of leeks in the garden
  • roller derby on friday, a rather sloppy round 1 against norcal and then a more impressive round 2 interleague bout (too hot to stay for rounds 3 & 4)
  • trying to make my own vinaigrette
  • pulling endless weeds from the back planting beds, and finding what may be a massive stand of asparagus (too late to be cut for this season)
  • first farmer's market trip of the season, and going early to get the last dozen farm eggs
  • yoga (cheap) and hula dancing (free!) lessons at work

what i did in 2006:

wrote a zine, printed the cover on my new letterpress
bought rollerskates and learned how to skate
jan-july: ate healthy, worked out a lot, lost ~25lbs
applied to graduate school
tried out for the boston derby dames
spent one month skating my ass off with bdd
broke my ankle
got into harvard
spent the summer recovering from ankle surgery
spent a lot of time being depressed and anxious about ankle (and weight re-gained)
learned how to walk again
went back to school, met some amazing people there
got engaged to the love of my life on christmas eve

last night a very vivid, exuberant dream in which i am rollerskating with my broken ankle, but it doesn't hurt. in the midst of the whole team, girls flying on all sides, up and down hills, dappled tree light, wind, laughing.

i'm very high right now on percoset, but DETERMINED to tell livejournal all about my shitty tuesday. at derby practice, i went into a sloppy turn, heard a massive CRUNCH in my left ankle, and fell to the floor, pretty much screaming in pain. pretty much.

prognosis: fractured fibula in two places, fractured tibia in one place, both around the ankle and generally a very unstable break requiring surgery to set properly. despite being given massive amounts of morphine last night, the pain just would not go away. was supposed to have surgery to put pins in the bone today, which meant i wasn't allowed to eat -- today, though, the o.r. is fully booked so surgery can't be until tomorrow, thus i can eat, and thus be fed percosets that have finally dulled the pain. finally.

the surgeon said if the swelling is not down today, she can't operate on it for two weeks. i don't have two weekss! sigh. i am begging them to do this now, before my oregon vacation, before my summer is essentially shot. especially because those are two weeks i would basically be bed-bound, at home, bored out of my skull. fuck. i do not have two weeks. so i'm trying to plead my case as best i can.

challenge of the afternoon: pee in a basin. try not to cry too much when they unwrap the jones bandage to look at the swelling. i can't move it without the bones grinding together and producing the most excruiciating pain.

fun facts: my roommate snored all night, extremely loudly, and now that she's awake, she likes to play pornographic books on tape outloud so we can all hear. no headphones. wtf.

oh yes, it's finally that time. i get to pick a derby name! as discussed here, my name cannot duplicate any other roller derby girl's name nationally (the full list is here).

thunder and lightning like the end of the world. the rain is just bucketing down, sirens everywhere, the lightning must have hit somewhere in town. the cracks of thunder are so sharp and loud i have jumped in my chair several times, they just crack and roll over the building over and over again. easily dozens of times just while writing this paragraph.

so. a raindate for tonight's roller derby bout in providence is pretty much a lock. meaning it will be moved to sunday, meaning i will miss it because of practice. boo.

in other news, last night i met with a former hgse student, and our conversation just proved to me that it will be impossible for me to work 17.5 hours/week next year while in school. i just cannot juggle the time committment on top of schoolwork + long commute + possible roller derby. now i have to figure out when i will quit this job, and sign my name on some truly massive loans.

we got back at midnight last night from the providence roller derby bout in kennedy plaza, the old money honeys vs the mob squad! the game went into quadruple overtime because they kept tying, and one overtime jam was a re-do because it was called too early. the final, heartbreaking score:
mob squad 118
old money honeys 116

after watching the honeys kick ass consistently the whole game, it really sucked to see their lead sucked away at the last minute. gameplay on both sides was largely carried by only two or three skaters, whose speed and grace just dominated the others. the honeys' two best skaters were dolly rocket and jailbird jenny; the best skaters on the mob squad were iron maidenform, bunicula -- honorably mention to dasilva bullet. i would say dolly rocket was the honeys' biggest asset -- she was an excellent jammer, lightning-quick and nimble, but more importantly, she was an astounding pivot, controlling the pack really well and acting as the last defensive line to tire out the opposing team's jammer. this was the first time i've really seen the pivot position put to such good use. dolly rocket was truly my favorite. though i definitely went hoarse yelling for dolly & jenny both.

it was just incredible to watch the amount of energy it took out of these girls to skate so hard and so fast for a full game. by the fourth overtime jam you could really tell they were tired as hell. this game was notably clearer to follow because their refs were excellent skaters -- when we saw the boston derby dames compete back in march, their refs were only okay-skaters and seemed to have a hard time determining some of the rules.

jailbird jenny, one of my new crushes.

here you can see bunicula's bunny ears -- this is the pack before take-off.

jailbird jenny on the jammers' starting line.

(most of my other pictures came out completely blurred, the camera just wasn't fast enough with the low light.)

i just got home from the boston derby dames' skate clinic!
everyone told me to take it easy and rest this weekend after the food
poisoning, but i think i was fine. i skated for nearly two hours and
i'm feeling okay. i only fell once! and i learned how to stop, finally,
some rudimentary dragging toe stops. still no crossovers, though.

tonight we are going to the small press talk & discussion at feed your
head bookstore
.
(edit, apparently it was at 5! we missed the whole thing! we said hello to roxi but i felt so embarassed for having missed it. but we did walk around town and see a very nice comic book store. we will have to visit feed your head another time, so cute.) & tomorrow is liz's birthday party to watch the sox game.

i have a dandelion in my hair.
