we got back at midnight last night from the providence roller derby bout in kennedy plaza, the old money honeys vs the mob squad! the game went into quadruple overtime because they kept tying, and one overtime jam was a re-do because it was called too early. the final, heartbreaking score:
mob squad 118
old money honeys 116after watching the honeys kick ass consistently the whole game, it really sucked to see their lead sucked away at the last minute. gameplay on both sides was largely carried by only two or three skaters, whose speed and grace just dominated the others. the honeys' two best skaters were dolly rocket and jailbird jenny; the best skaters on the mob squad were iron maidenform, bunicula -- honorably mention to dasilva bullet. i would say dolly rocket was the honeys' biggest asset -- she was an excellent jammer, lightning-quick and nimble, but more importantly, she was an astounding pivot, controlling the pack really well and acting as the last defensive line to tire out the opposing team's jammer. this was the first time i've really seen the pivot position put to such good use. dolly rocket was truly my favorite. though i definitely went hoarse yelling for dolly & jenny both.
it was just incredible to watch the amount of energy it took out of these girls to skate so hard and so fast for a full game. by the fourth overtime jam you could really tell they were tired as hell. this game was notably clearer to follow because their refs were excellent skaters -- when we saw the boston derby dames compete back in march, their refs were only okay-skaters and seemed to have a hard time determining some of the rules.

jailbird jenny, one of my new crushes.

here you can see bunicula's bunny ears -- this is the pack before take-off.

(most of my other pictures came out completely blurred, the camera just wasn't fast enough with the low light.)
