Jul. 1st, 2003 09:29 ami got sick of my own procrastinatory self, never remembering to take my old olympus camera to the shop to get fixed, so instead i went on ebay and bought a holga. it is coming in a few days. oh i am excited. mystery box. unpredictableness! i am a sucker for a cheap thrill.
.
k and i want to go to the free boston pops concert at the outdoor hatch shell on the charles river on july fourth. they play stirringly patriotic music while the fireworks go off after 9 pm. unfortunately, everything i've read indicates that you have to get there at 9 am in order to get a spot on the lawn. harumph. well, depending on the weather, we may try it anyway. we are going to buy low beach chairs and a cooler and a sun umbrella and bring a blanket and dominoes and travel chess and books of crossword puzzles and frozen margaritas in a thermos and decadent picnicky things.
hmm. well, these are all things we will need for beach trips later, so i do not feel guilty about buying any of it. perhaps we will also go to tanglewood to see outdoor concerts. and also to my grandmother's lake cabin in connecticut. and to east beach in rhode island. oh! so many places. i am excited to do summery things, now that it really is summer.
k and i are also going to his family reunion in texas, august 2-3. i am a little apprehensive about intentionally going to where it is so hot, on my birthday (the 2nd). i don't want to be fussed over in front of all his extended family, but his mother is always so sweet about it and so secretly i am pleased with the idea.
.
maryann, are you reading this? i wonder.

Re:
Date: 2003-07-01 08:55 am (UTC)i wish you could come. despite the silliness of patriotism, it is fun to hear the big brassy pops orchestra and see so many crazy families swarming around. this will be the biggest july 4th thing i've ever been to. apparently it's one of the largest in the nation, and very few have live orchestras, too. also, i hate to admit it, but some mitochondria-level spirit must stir in my body, because at the baseball game last week the only thing i truly liked was when a pair of trumpeters played the national anthem--it was beautiful and you could hear people really quietly begin to sing along the words with them, by the end. i got all teary. *sniff* sigh.
Re:
Date: 2003-07-01 08:59 am (UTC)if kirk and i go, i am sure we will have extra blanket room...just give my cell phone a call in the afternoon and i'll tell you where to find us in the crowd. or, just look for the slim tanned texan and the sun-stricken albino oregonian :)
if you want to go late, you can still crowd onto the bridges near the hatch shell, or the bike/jogging paths along the river on either side. don't make the mistake i made two years ago: if you go to a bridge in cambridge, you will be around the bend of the river from the fireworks & won't see a thing even though you'll be right on the river. head for the crowds! i think the T may be free that night, i can't remember. it was on new year's eve.

Re:
Date: 2003-07-01 09:32 am (UTC)thanks for the rundown!!!
i don't think i have your cell phone number.
i just have the number of your lovely house.
Re:
Date: 2003-07-01 09:34 am (UTC)okay, it is 617-312-9373.
Re:
Date: 2003-07-01 09:38 am (UTC)i got the number programed into my little phone.
oh i need to return your books to you!
you should come to the chowder fest!
it's on sunday
do you like clam chowder?
i'm not crazy about clam chowder but it's a chowderfest and i feel like i have to go.
Re:
Date: 2003-07-01 09:40 am (UTC)oh i had no idea.
i do like chowder.
where/when is it?
fireworks et cetera
Date: 2003-07-01 02:05 pm (UTC)(i haven't a clue what my plans are, exactly. megan (http://www.livejournal.com/~nevers) will be here and i am sure we'll wander somewhere to see the fireworks but other than that, who knows.
Re: fireworks et cetera
Date: 2003-07-02 05:51 am (UTC)(& oh, i'm so glad you two are getting to spend time together.)
addendum:
Date: 2003-07-02 07:22 am (UTC)fireworks et cetera
Date: 2003-07-02 07:24 am (UTC)i just read that entry to the hatch shell oval is restricted after 2pm to only people who've entered & gotten a wristband before then. lame! i feel silly for having offered something without knowing that much about the event...but i thought you'd like to know. there is nothing worse than spilling through crowds on hot afternoons and standing in line only to be told you can't get in. i wanted to save you the trouble, just in case :)
fireworks et cetera
Date: 2003-07-02 07:48 am (UTC)i suppose our plans will depend on the weather and such (if it's not godawful hot we could easily amuse ourselves by peoplewatching and talking for hours) but if we do end up at the hatch shell i will call your cell and say hello.
(and yes, i'm terribly excited about the prospect of contented companionableness, et cetera. yay for visits from lovely people.)
