saturday was a massachusetts tax holiday! so we went to target. we got: socks, more socks, a 16x20 picture frame for my socialist avanti della domenica poster from rome, ratchet & clank 2 for ps2, and a rose dish chair. not bad. we were awake at 6:30 and so we ended up going to the store at 8 when it opened---what a strange thing that was. empty parking lot, empty aisles. we took a long time.

we played with the new aqua micro pets things, which are suspended in water and are ADORABLE. they make bleep bleep noises and dance around in their little water spheres. also, my dream has finally come true and there are more fairy dolls in the toy aisles than ever! i have so many weird random fairy dolls from when i was little, and they weren't in fashion for so long. but now they are! oh gosh. i had to restrain myself. also we clearly need a special toy shelf in the house to hold all the toys we collect on these shopping expeditions.

i know -- they are disturbingly phallic. i think they must know that already, though, because they don't look like that in the packaging, only outside of the box.

well, there *were* lots around when i was little. one of my favorite series had detachable wings and all the clothing was made to look like bits of shiny tinfoil, because that particular fairy had been rescued from the human world, where she had made her outfits out of some trash heap, i suppose. it sounds gross now! but the story enchanted me. i still have that doll somewhere. and a bunch of others. there is some series of dolls called 'winx' fairies and amusingly they each come with props to indicate their particular affinity. one was music (dj equipment, cd player), one was gardening (flowers, flowerpots, tiny garden rake), etc. one's was boys, i guess, because she came with all kinds of weird boy-crazy indicating things. we were really confused at first. i think i said outloud, uh, is her power boys? semen? that's why we're only allowed in family stores in the pre-dawn hours!!!

we saw more sunshine buddies at the store, too! but i refrained. i keep thinking that if it had a clock i would buy one, but then i realize that a solar-powered clock is maybe a bad idea.... ;)

Tax holiday! Are such things common? Here in Oregon i suppose they ain't really necessary--although a sales tax might be, little good as one would do me personally.

no, not common at all, sadly. i think it was a mea culpa from the governor/mayor because it turns out the city lost big bucks over the convention, instead of gaining like they forecasted. of course they're not admitting that, but all kinds of massachusetts-hooray type stuff has been cropping up this summer.
