May. 23rd, 2005 11:30 ama guy just crashed a plumber's van into the brick wall that surrounds our building. i saw a cloud of white smoke rising from the wall immediately afterwards, passing a facing window. i ran downstairs to the street because no one else watching at the windows seemed to want to. one man had watched the driver having a seizure as he crossed the intersection, another passer-by was a doctor and asked him questions until he came out of his fog and the paramedics arrived.
it's sad to look at. the wall is six feet high, and a huge van-shaped piece is buckled inward, pushing into the lilac bushes and the rhodedendrons. they'll have to take down a large part of the wall to repair it, exposing the side of the building to a large intersection. from where i was standing, i could see right in the front windshield, and he looked right at me. i watched the paramedics gingerly help the man out of his seat. for a moment he stopped trying to get up and banged on the steering wheel, swearing at himself.
