kirk and i have been casting a gimlet eye at our bookshelves, realizing we don't have some of the super awesome books we'd like penny to read when she gets older. these are books that formed our identity, changed the way we viewed the world and fiction, and consider absolutely classic for kids growing up in a vaguely nerdy house. a very partial list:

his dark materials series
the dark is rising series
snow crash
good omens
madeleine l'engle's books
the hobbit
mara, daughter of the nile (my favorite YA)
the hero and the crown (YA girl protag fantasy)
anne of green gables (problematic but oh well)
the narnia books

we are looking for: high fantasy. classic sci-fi. historical fiction. books that girls need to read. fantasy/sci fi with female protagonists in particular. adult fiction that many of us read as middle/YA readers.

not welcome: horse fiction. little house on the prairie.

what would you add?
