things i want to remember about today: the way the golden mid-afternoon winter light looked in east boston, riding out on the blue line to wonderland. the way the triple-decker houses scanning by in a row looked so familiar and gentle. and later how all the blue scrambled clouds were flocking over 1A while i drove along and a xavier rudd song played on the radio that made me think of paul simon.

at black ink today i bought classic italian cooking: recipes for mastering the italian kitchen, which is a small, perfectly utilitarian hardback book with green edges and two bookmark ribbons, and the whole thing came pleasingly wrapped in crinkly cellophane. there is an identical edition on french cooking, in tiffany blue. so pretty, though i refuse to buy pretty cookbooks if i won't use them.

for dinner tonight: savory and sweet pocket pies. yum.

oh how i love cookbooks. and cooking. which is so weird, considering my own fucked up eating. this afternoon i was looking through bill granger's new cookbook, which i got just before christmas, and it struck me, as it always does, that space between my owning cookbooks/reading food magazines/watching the lifestyle food channel and yet all the stupid things i feel, personally, regarding my own intake (or lack thereof) of food. how were the pocket pies? ]

yes -- and the light is all the nicer when it's not zero degrees out! i like this mild winter we're having.

also, the pocket pies were very easy and super tasty!!! highly recommended.

bill granger's style looks very nice. and sometimes i think the connection between cooking and cookbooks is rather tenuous, and that's okay, in the same way that reading fashion magazines is fun in a way that would never translate to me dressing or acting like those kinds of women, you know?

the pocket pies were super yummy! and very easy to make, i was surprised. i am always a little leery of anything involving dough kneading, but this was really easy biscuit dough to work with. as a bonus, i got to cut out the rounds from the dough using the vintage biscuit cutter i bought while antiquing in texas. did i ever send you pictures of the things i found? if not, i should!
