had the suddenly irresistible idea to go as my high school self for halloween.
  • dye my hair blue
  • doc martens
  • weird thrift store pants or purple tights under a ridiculous skirt
  • half destroyed tshirt
  • rhinestone cardigan
  • stuff my bra to make up for the breast reduction
  • no earrings
  • meaningful ribbons around my wrist
  • ball chain necklace
  • sleater-kinney + lida husik mixtape on my shitty walkman
  • lots of rings
  • weird socks
  • journal in my backpack

what would you look like if you went as your high school self? do you own most of it still? i would have a hard time coming up with most of this now, though certain things, like my old high school backpack, i still have. ahhh for blue hair. i wonder what my workmates would think.

i was not nearly interesting enough in high school to dress up as that self! well, the elaborately braided hair would be fun if i had enough hair.

like [livejournal.com profile] nevers, i was much more visually boring in high school. my hair colour changed a lot, but if we go with how i looked at graduation then it'd be short, blond buzzcut, remove all piercings and tattoos, shrink ear lobes down to normal size, jeans, docs and some sort of sweatshirt and that's about it.

*misses having dyed hair*

I think I own three shirts (plus some t-shirt) still from that time, but they're not the most evocative. I would need dyed black or a weird purple-red hair (length would be fine, but I would have blown it out in a weird and too-perfect way even though it's short), thrifted t-shirt with baggy pants (or else short shorts, it was Arizona), frog earrings, ball chain or hemp necklace, converse or flip-flops, backpack with weird patches and buttons.

Sorry to hijack your post, but I found photos of all this and my high school reunion just passing I feel a need to spend too much time thinking about all this.

Okay, short red hair, hemp necklace, old sweater I stole from my parents' clost.

Weirdly blown out hair (this took me like an hour every morning), German exchange students, and one of those 3 shirts I still own. I seriously wore this last week.

The backpack and the converse and another shirt I still wear.

were the big blue glasses frames from middle or high school? i remember those clearly. and you'd need extensions. you had long hair for part of high school if i remember correctly.

haha, these are awesome! the blown out hair is odd, wow. i don't think i knew how to use a hair dryer until i went to college. i might have a few old shirts in storage, but i definitely got rid of a lot of the crappy thrifted stuff i wore back then. half the time it was, like, wearing dresses as skirts or something like that.

that was only in fifth grade, i think. i had long hair until after hamlet, which was junior year. after that i had hair about the same length it is now.

did you have manic panic? that's what we used to dye our hair interesting colors. i was remembering the smell of it yesterday, and how it was an exciting trip to the cool alternative boutiques to buy it.

Yeah, even once I was all thrift stores all the time, I still had to have "perfect" hair. It did not match at all. Dressing like a boy made a lot more sense once I had short hair.

but what about stuff like, having ballet shoes in your bag? or stuff like that. stuff that i carried around was so important back then. that little front backpack pocket contained all my little treasures and weird crap. like chalk to write subversive messages when the teacher wasn't looking. (oh god, high schoolllllll.)

i had black hair (bobbed, no bangs), fingernails painted black, black lipstick, black eyeliner, black opaque stockings, black mary janes, a bunch of silver rings and a small ball chain necklace with a charm on it that was like an alphabet block with an R, a black slip of some sort or black vintage dress with a black cardigan and a blue jansport backpack with song lyrics written on the leather part which turned into a briefcase by the time i got to college. and i carried around a little tin with scissors, a needle and thread and parts of a quilt i was making in it, and i work on it in class and on the bus.

i had a little tin with incense and, horrors, the occasional clove cigarette in it. because you can't smell cigarettes over the stink of altoids! or at least we thought so.

my jansport was blue, too :)

i had the t-strap mary janes, maybe they were like a doc martens knock off. and later i got the authentic 8-hole boots, but that was after i graduated from hs. we didn't really have the money for DM shoes in high school.

i didn't discover manic panic until college. in high school i just bought the stuff from the supermarket. when i went blond i went to a salon because i had to get the black dye bleached out. but, yes, manic panic, how i loved looking like a smurf after dyeing my hair blue. ;)

i think i had one or two really cool friends who seemed to know about all that stuff. that makes me wonder where they got it...how does one randomly wander into those second-floor walkup thrift stores in the middle of downtown nothingness? anyway. we are sisters in the blue-hair-having! i had mine blue when it was really long and still curly. i loved the point where it stated to fade and i had green mermaid curls.
