aslantthe twenty-four hour zine project is done!
it is sixteen pages, quarter-sized. it contains a few random poems by kirk & myself, various illustrations, and one map of an imaginary town. i am especially proud of the cover--it is pink and green vertical stripes, with lettering done with antique typewriter-ish stamps.
so far, eight out of twelve copies have been claimed. would you like one? send an email to aslant @ livejournal.com with your address.

kirk & i went to brunch at ryles' jazz club on sunday. we read the paper and stayed drinking our coffee for an hour or two after---the jazz was actually quite good. the only problem is that you cannot get alcohol before noon in cambridge, so we had normal oj instead of mimosas. they had something else i wanted to try, a kir, with champagne and chambourd. mmm. we'll have to back sometime. stupid blue laws. but the eggs benedict more than made up for it.
afterward, we wandered over to the used bookstore in central square, and then pearl art supplies. he bought some watercolor pencils & cheap canvasses; i bought a bottle of ink and a pen and some nibs. the apartment was strewn with various jars of water and pencil shavings and ink-dotted papertowels and paints by the end of the afternoon, it was a lot of fun. & then i read the virginia woolf biography until i fell asleep. it was a lovely, lovely weekend.

seems there maybe similar blue laws here--haven't actually looked into it yet, but the friendly liquor store just down the street closes on sundays, so i assume. i'd forgotten what it's like to live somewhere that you must go to liquor stores, rather than buying liquor & things at the grocery store. the good side to that is the liquor stores tend to have wider selections, but the fact that it's two trips is a pain in the arse, and for whatever reason makes me feel more like a lush.
i loves me some cheap-ass champagne.

i get annoyed having to buy wine at a separate store...i used to buy it much more frequently when it was in the grocery store. perhaps i am saving $$ by default, but my life now lacks a certain wine-hazy lustre, i think.
going to liquor stores around here makes me feel like i'm still in college. it's like it's time to STOCK UP, NEED ALCOHOL BADLY. gee we better get the GALLON jug instead of the smaller bottle and we might as well get a case of that cheap-ass champagne while we're here....

Date: 2003-08-18 02:11 pm (UTC)oh, that early hermione lee chapter on "houses"! while less interesting to my mind that some other chapters, god it's detailed. it made my head spin. i'm glad i read a typical, chronological bio prior to this one, for a more linear sense of woolf, but this one is really fabulous.
yes, i used to buy wine (or something) for just about every meal i shopped for, just cos it was right there, but now that i have to make a separate trip, even tho it's just around the corner, it's weird. even when i'm buying very little--you're totally right--i still feel like i'm getting ready for a college party, and more than a little bit guilty about it. very weird.
