May. 30th, 2004 10:01 pmthe barbeque ended up being really fun -- liz & mike even hiked up the hill from their house partway through, and came in to meet the cats & etc. but mainly i stood out in the sun waving my little plastic flag, grinning like an idiot at marching bands and little league squads and shriners galore. and a clown or two. a lot of the veterans in cars & marching groups waved back enthusiastically. i met a bunch of the neighbors, & moms of neighbor-kid's classmates. i was remembering that statistic quoted in the nytimes about wwii veterans dying at the rate of 1,500 per day, and how there's no more room in the war cemetaries and everything like that. not enough taps players. very sad. but the parade was so fun! miles & miles of fun.
high authority in a secretive society of rich men, or laurel & hardy? you decide.
this guy is going to whack me with his mallet in a second...
the new liberty jazz band! these guys played the coolest old school dancey jazz songs. i wanted to follow them down the street dancing. they needed little swing dancers to follow them around.
cheerleaders! omg i was so excited about them, even though they didn't do their pompom thing in front of our block. somerville high school! also the lead cheerleader had some weird speakerbox on her hip & kept trying to play some noise, but it was just white noise. go somerville po-mo noisemakers! or something.
aaaaaand one totally gratuitous picture of pippa in our new armchair (free on the side of the road).

Date: 2004-05-31 09:39 am (UTC)i didn't even get a photo of the prettiest horse, which was with a group of guys dressed up all westerny--no idea who they were--anyway the horse was a deep burnt red color with big white patches, like out of an old western movie. so gorgeous & elegant.

Date: 2004-05-31 09:44 am (UTC)poor pippa & milou were so freaked out by the parade noise...when we went in the house afterwards, both cats were hiding on top of a box that is under a table---with like three inches of clearance, of course, so they have to scrabble to get out. i wish i'd thought to go inside & close the windows....some of the minutemen fired off their muskets every block or so, which must have terrified them to no end. not to mention the regular drum noise & etc. what a spectacle.
everybody loves the chair! i'm afraid the golden tones of this photograph are very flattering, in reality it's not quite that richly colored. but a good find, no? the carvings are quite unique & in very good shape. it was only missing its seat cushion, & has discoloration on the arms a little. but so comfy. in a better house, it will be next to the bookcase & with a lamp & table next to it, it's perfect for that.
