yesterday i received my copy of full tilt #2: dancing away from home, by megan/[livejournal.com profile] nevers, and i just finished reading it. it is 39 pages of writing about her life and experiences as a young dancer at Virginia School of the Arts (VSA), a residential high school. if you have ever been fascinated by boarding school stories or the world of dance (as i have), or even if you just know about nostalgia and its strange effect on memory, i would highly recommend this zine. her musings on the personal, social, and academic particulars of the school are very interesting; i especially liked the illustrations of the standard hairdos and attire. the mix of anecdote with facts, recollections, and present-day analysis of hard-to-categorize memories and feelings makes for a very readable, enjoyable slice of memoir narrative.

my copy (from the first printing) has a sewn binding, and is printed on fine paper with quite a few photocopied pictures and illustrations, with a very classic, neat and pleasing text layout (she notes it was "inspired by an 1883 art exhibit catalog of J. McNeil Whistler". ordering info is here if you're interested. the zine was created as part of a 48-hour zine challenge, but it has the look and feel of a much more robust, edited, & well-considered zine than you would think the time constraint allows for.

blush! (truly, cheeks burning)

thank you so much, jesse. this is the first i've heard from someone who's read it aside from heather (oh and also audrey, who's currently a VSA student), and you know how easy it can be to wonder if something you've just created is fabulous or crap. i'm glad you like it.

(future printings will be stapled but still on pretty paper.)

ah, you are quick! i really was so very impressed by the neatness of this (i am such a freak about layout & properly aligned text & such), not to mention the content. i really enjoyed reading it, i want to read it again to absorb more of it later today. thank you for making it!

i am quick because i am refreshing my friends page obsessively instead of ending my too-long lunch break and getting to work.

i'm really glad you liked the layout -- i was afraid it was too boring (the cover and title page and font and margins and zine size and combination of m-dashes with other puncutation were all based on whistler's catalog, but the layout of the text and photos itself was ad-hoc; the catalog's content was too different from my zine to really copy.)
