the esteemable hour.

one of my wings
beat faster than the other,
i couldn't help it---
the one away from the light.
it hurt to be told
all the time
how i loved that terrible flame.

so despite misgivings, halloween was lots of fun anyway. i got dolled up before the girls came home, all red&black stripey, with the candy-apple red wig. turned on all the outside lights. put out our happy jack-o-lantern. fixed up the house to look nice etc. put the giant candy bowl by the door.
by 6:15 we had the first doorbell rings, and crowds of adorable children parading by, lions and princesses, a george bush, rock stars, ghouls and goblins, ninjas, robots. much later some hooligans that said with snide pre-teen glee, is that your real hair? i smirk back at them absolutely, darlink.
we had the spiced brandy cider (with the Very Special brandy) and the twice-roasted goat cheese potatoes; other goodies. we stampeded to the door every time it rang and gave out candy by the handfuls. it was so fun. i do adore seeing the kiddies like that, all starry-eyed and smiling. halloween with a house is much better indeed.
my favorite were two girls in a larger group. they wore sparkly wigs and were dressed in miniskirts and "diva" rhinestone shirts. what are you? we asked. pink sparkly wig answered, "i'm a pop star and she's a rock star. we're opposites." i see, we nodded at them knowingly.
j is coming home early with her petites malades. all this mold in the air, yes yes, clogging up the sinuses left & right. i will have company in my long and empty afternoon.
ran this morning, good and long, doubling back and forth through belmont suburbia.
true grit is on right now. ah, john wayne.
tonight we're going to the b-side. saturday is the big party. all sorts of unexpected guests are in town and will be here. oooh i'm so excited. it makes up for not having a proper party last night.
