columbus day weekend, just like every year, is canadian thanksgiving weekend at my grandparents' house. yay! we are driving to connecticut in a little while, and bringing the mushroom wild rice casserole. it is long-grain dark wild rice (i used mille lacs minnesota rice) with long-grain white rice, mixed with a panful of sauteed mushrooms + celery + onion, with toasted/sauteed almonds and mushroom caps on top and baked until hot. i made it last night and hopefully it will taste even better today (like baked risotto!) because last night it seemed kind of bland :( more salt, maybe. it had 2 tbsp soy sauce in it, but i don't like the soy sauce flavor too dominant in this. it's supposed to taste more like rice stuffing.

i wish today were a little more autumnal--it's kind of bright and mild outside. oh well. happy canadian thanksgiving!

ooof. as foretold, stomach-burstingly good. we left with a big panful of the rice casserole, we came back with the same container stuffed to the top with stuffing & rice & turkey & etcetera. very satisfying :)

the whole time my grandfather thought i was my mother and kept asking how 'my little boy' was!! (by which he meant my dad? or my brother? or my cousin?) also he is so confused he does not seem to realize it is a special occasion, so he makes disparaging remarks (apparently to gain sympathy?) about the food & the utensils etc at the alzheimer's facility, saying, oh i haven't eaten like this in years etc. i wished there was a way to explain to him---the rest of us only eat this way once a year! you're really not missing out on as much as you think you are! but things like that are beyond explanation, you know?
