so i abandoned my nano novel. my heart just wasn't in it anymore---i am so bad at giving up my evenings and weekends for a project i have a love-hate relationship with. mainly i am annoyed because if i choose to do it again next year, i will have two completed years and one missed year, instead of a nice steady string of three completed years. oh well. partly i think the smutfactor of the story made me sad, made me reluctant, made me feel like i was cheating. farewell, dora!

.

meanwhile the shoes i ordered from sketchers.com arrived and they are ass ugly. i am so disappointed! the shoes i bought from them three years ago were awesome and perfect, and i guess they don't make them anymore. the old ones have cute sort of squared-off toes; the ones that arrived have ugly rounded tips that are too narrow and make me feel like an especially well-heeled maid. :( so i am returning them and next i am going to try ordering one of these from docmartens.com instead:

sigh. why is finding a plain yet pleasing pair of women's oxfords so damned hard? stupid fashion world.

i sympathize, as you know. i will write you an email on my trials.

they are good for walking (no heels) and look nice enough with any outfit so i can wear them to work & then change into heels when i get there, or stay in the oxfords. also i am on a quest to replace the old sketchers pair, which are crumbling to pieces and bad to walk in now.

also, i am ridiculously exacting about what i want in this future perfect pair of shoes. and it's unbelievable how many not-perfect pairs there are out there.

looking forward to it! (i remember you were on a quest of your own...)

i am! the end may be in sight... i sent you an email. i like the top shoes here best -- dressier. the bottom ones would be great with jeans but perhaps not with office attire as much? is there someplace you can go that sells docs so you can see how they look on you first?

oh, i sympathize with your plight. my favorite shoes [and the ones i wear almost everyday] are a pair of red doc marten mary janes which took me forever to find. they're exactly what i had been looking for, but in the process of finding them i found so many mary janes that were either a) not red or b) with heels which were just ugly and awful.

currently, i'm going through a similar situation trying to find a good pair of black pinstripe pants. i went and tried on at least four pairs earlier this week and they all were cut for someone with smaller hips and were lowrise and made me look awful. bah!

good luck with the oxfords!

yes, a number of places, although it is hit or miss whether they will have the style i want. another annoying part about this is that the sketchers shoes were a nice $50, whereas the doc martens will end up being closer to $78 or more. (a small price to pay, of course, compared to how much i will end up wearing them!)

i also considered the oxblood-red color of the t-strap mary janes, on the offchance the oxfords don't end up being what i want after all. i love mary janes. at least they are reliable, unlike the manifold varieties of oxfords i find that are decidedly wrong.

mmm, doc martens. i would purchase the second pair, thus revealing my penchant for what my mother calls big ugly army boots.

i had a much-loved pair of black maryjanes that i wore to death in high school, and a pair of eight-inch high boots i wore to death in college. both were retired only when it got to the point where they were painful to wear, worn and curved at the back of the heel so my knees unconsciously overextend when i stand in them. ow ow.

odd to come back to a brand i felt i outgrew, but funny how i no longer associate them with the angsty kids i grew up with, and instead with the normal people my age who just like good shoes :)

those 8065s are some of my favorites. so perfect for everyday. i would get them, except this new idealized pair must be weatherproof on top, since they will end up being my default slog-through-winter shoes as well as my standby work shoes.

oh don't worry. after searching online after the ugly sketchers arrived, i became very familiar with the docmartens weird catalog search function :)

THX (1138) for your addition to my work at mthrtongue.
Now I ponder.
Perhaps you are right.

Innyhoo,
they expect to hear from me in Pisa soon, so I can't think about it too much now.

you confuse me. why are you going to pisa? who is they?

the asstronaut episode is my favorite one. i really hope you know what i'm talking about. that show is fucking genius. your username and the thx 1138 reference are the only things that make sense to me in your comment. reports of my brain are greatly etc.

My dear, as a member of the literati, you should know it runs:
"who ARE they?"
And you know the answer would never help.
Just know that Pisa e mite as my messenger informed me.

Indeed, we know "what you are talking about" as one says, in the parlance of our times.

You have heard my opinions of translators earlier today.
Honestly, my dear, I work 12 hours a day, explicating unspeakable mystery.
In my spare time, I obfuscate the mundane.

"and yet still aging"
