saturday: on the way back from rollerskating (packed with horrible birthday party children) we went to the saugus iron works national historic site. we were nearly the only ones there and the bored and very nice park ranger gave us a personal tour of the iron works house (which was actually closed for the season). also, i climbed down to a stream and used a stick to fish out a five dollar bill.

today/sunday: we drove out to old sturbridge village. it was practically empty, being off-season. we were bundled up and walked all around the village. our favorite was probably the print shop (of course), though the farm kitchen was fun, too. i got to wash dishes and we chatted with the two women working there. we might go back next weekend, as our tickets are good for ten days, and only a few shops are staffed at a time during the winter. at the gift shop i bought a redware pottery jug.

we didn't bring the camera on saturday, but here are pictures from sturbridge village:

thank you :) too bad i couldn't film the pigs -- they were snoring. it was frightening and cute at the same time! they were simply massive.

at first, i thought you meant ice skating, because there is a little ice rink on the common at sturbridge village, byo skates only. then i realized you probably mean roller skating! and yes, we should definitely try to go! we'll have to see how the timing works out in the morning with getting to the zine fair.

wonderful pictures! I haven't been to Sturbridge Village since I was in about 4th or 5th grade and I can remember exactly where most of these pictures are on the site. Thanks for bringing back some memories!

What a lovely weekend of trips, it seems!

the last time i went was when i was seven or eight, not quite 20 years ago. it was so weird to go back! in the gift shop i found the same tiny wooden plates/cups/bowls set i bought when i first went.

both trips were rather spontaneous, which made them more fun :)

I can imagine things felt a little smaller than when you were a kid. :) The only place I've been back to that I went on a field trip as a kid is the Mystic Aquarium, but that had changed a lot, it seemed.

Anyway, three cheers for spontaneous trips! That definitely makes them all the more fun. :)
