ridiculous movies seen yesterday:
  • xanadu: now i have the theme song's refrain stuck in my head. the final rollerskating dance frenzy scene was so awesomely bad, it was perfect. we fast-forwarded through a lot of the early scenes in the movie, though.
  • the girls' room: a ridiculous sermonizing college movie about learning to love people who are different!!! puke. soleil moon frye/punky brewster looking approximately 40 years old and playing a confused semi-goth college slut, wil wheaton playing an asshole frat boy who looks both ways for onlookers before he kisses his southern belle girlfriend. this movie was actually kind of fun at first, but then it devolved into a series of nonsequitor scenes that seemed to be in the wrong order. wtf? we recorded this from the lifetime movie network, but you could have guessed that already.
awesome movie we saw this weekend: bright young things. so pretty and fun and good.

yes, xanadu is pretty insane. olivia newton-john can't act her way out of a wet paper bag, but at least she looked kind of cool on roller skates! kirk was surprised i hadn't seen it before...when he lived with a group of ballet dancers they used to watch it alllll the time, apparently.

murderous sorority, hmm? i'll keep an eye on the lifetime ("television for women!") channel for that one, sounds right up their alley. at least, it will be if it has a stupid moral in it...

Xanadu simultaneously fueled both my teenage Olivia Newton-John lust and my burning desire to own a nightclub/roller rink (and, hey, can you go wrong with Gene Kelly?) I have the LP soundtrack album if you'd like to hear the Jeff Lynne/Electric Light Orchestra designed score again (and again...)

We screened Girls Room at the Rudder Film Fest several years ago. Aside from the Punky Brewster/Wil Wheaton Where Are They Now-fu, there wasn't any reason to like this film. It does not surprise me that Lifetime has picked it up.

If you really have to do the horrible independent film/USC film school final project thing, and you have that burning need to see Wil Wheaton, you could always try Jane White is Sick and Twisted, but I wouldn't recommend it.

...oh, and MY muse *still* looks like Olivia Newton-John. Those leg warmers were AWESOME.

i am SO SURPRISED that someone else has seen girls room!! i suppose there is a certain wheaton geekdom to be seen in it, but still. wow.

i just couldn't stand o n-j's incessant ethereal fey crap. i am floaty and australian! with foofy garments! i love how her boyfriend was cool with never knowing anything about her, too. so many holes! but then, this is what happens when you let adults (on painkillers) watch bad old movies :)
