saturday we took the train to providence for the kentucky derby party and we had a grand old time. it was sunny and warm and mild, and we wandered through the RISD alumni art fair, and we wandered past a pow-wow, and everything was blooming and pretty and perfect. we brought a thermos full of our special lime gin concoction, and i had a few mint juleps too many while we waited for, watched, and then marveled at the ultra-brief spectacle of unidentifiable horses running in a small circle. i picked the winner! except, in my drink, i kept wanting to call him smarty pants, not smarty jones.

we stayed the night with jenn & conan, and they made us a fabulous brunch, and we all lounged around lazily, reading the paper and drinking coffee etcetera. sunday was our second anniversary (our first meeting was here in boston, our first anniversary was here during the roadtrip), and i think the weekend was a lovely anniversary. it was easy and comfortable and pretty and i was so relaxed.

.

despite my thrifty intentions, i signed up for the $10/month towel service at the gym, to lighten the load when walking to & from work and working out. i am not a fan of the back-breaking shoulder bag. i am lazy and refuse to carry shoes, either, so i walk from the gym to work in my sneakers. although in theory i like the idea of wearing sneakers with skirts, i always want those sneakers to be

like this (fashionable)

not this (functional).

ah! my issues exactly! fortunately PT has free towels (as does the gym downstairs) but i have yet to find a good solution for sneakers. mine are currently functional and old and unattractive (and smelly). i wore them with dressy work pants for the first couple weeks immediately after knee surgery, but now that i can walk fine, i don't think that fashion faux-pas is excusable. so i have to lug the damn bulky things in my bag three days a week for PT (and i don't work out the other two, even though i would like to, because id on't want to carry them every single day). i can't really leave them at work because i go straight home after PT. i thought that buying cute $90 fashionable sneakers would be a solution, but it really isn't. i don't think i'd feel right working out in hip sneakers anyway.

i do have a pair of dress shoes at work, but of course, as if sneakers-with-dress-clothes-while-commuting didn't make me feel 40 years old already, keeping dress shoes at work feels like a pretty stodgy habit, too. i'm trying to train myself not to care :)

and yeah, i would never work out in $90 fashion sneakers, either, because i'd want them to remain pretty and crisp for when i wore them with nicer outfits. i have cute saucony sneakers, but even after a summer or two they're starting to look really worn. sad.

all of this would be a lot easier if i commuted in a car, instead of carrying my life around on my shoulder from 6:30am until whenever i get home.

wow-- so you wear the same shoes every day at work? i don't know if i could deal with that! i feel self-conscious wearing sneakers with dress clothes while commuting, too. especially in new york, where the subway is a fashion show itself.

at least i will be carrying less of my life around on my shoulder soon, once heather and i are living together rather than visiting each other!!

well, i wear them on days when i have to change my shoes. usually only once or twice a week, if i wear a skirt. i work out maybe 3-4 times a week on work days, so the sneaker thing doesn't happen as often as i probably think! besides, i don't walk around a whole lot at work, so people hardly see my shoes anyway. i also don't feel that self conscious, because on a normal non-shoe-changing day i'm usually wearing the same pair of black walking shoes anyway. i'm bad at varying my clothes/shoes to begin with :P

aaaand --- i don't think i've had the chance to say congratulations. i am very jealous of the moldings on your walls, and i know you will have a beautiful time decorating it :)

I actually own (a variation of) the hip sneakers, and I often wear them with skirts (as recently mentioned in my lj). unfortunately, i never work out. i suspect that's how it works. the hip sneakers seem comfortable enough (and i got them on super sale), but they'd probably disintegrate upon entering a gym.

also the lack of arch/pronation support would make me miserable. i love my fashiony sneakers, but they do absolutely nothing to support my feet :)

Oh man i feel that ache between fashion & function in shoes lately too. My job and my flat feet demand the white New Balance pair, but it flattens any cool impression effected by the rest of my outfit; damn.
