May. 30th, 2004 12:31 pmthis morning liz & i tried to go to the haymarket downtown, but it wasn't open, so instead we wandered around in the north end and bought bread & pastries at the 5,001 italian bakeries. i ate a cannoli & we sat in a deserted riverfront park by a big fountain and told stories about italy. it was lovely---such a beautiful blue-sky day, barely 65 degrees & windy.
k is working all day today, but i have been invited to the neighborhood block party/barbeque, in the driveway next to my house. the somerville memorial day parade is today---with the 60th anniversary of d-day, 5 different veterans' posts are marching, apparently. also, i don't know if it was a youth group or what, but just a moment ago i heard singing in the street & a little group of soldiers were marching down the street, which is closed for the parade. how odd. maybe they are a reenactment group or something? they all looked very wwii.
how odd to see soldiers marching down the street. i keep trying to think what this area must have been like in that era---was this building one big house? was the armory down the street open & active? what wasn't here? i want to corner an old-school somervillian (summer villain?) and ask them five million questions. anyway this barbecue will be fun....i have never met any of my neighbors. the little boy devin from the back apartment wants to come pet the cats at some point. yay. i should take pictures. there are chairs lined up & down the street & everything.
