today has been lovely and warm -- we went for a long walk on the beach, pestering seagulls, gawking at dogs, talking about farming. i am reading the omnivore's dilemma: a natural history of four meals by michael pollan, which is simply amazing. i have gotten past the dispiriting chapters about corn and how it has taken over THE ENTIRE WORLD and now i am in the good chapters about polyface farm, an amazing self-sustaining (but surprisingly non-hippie) farm in the shenandoah valley. i am loving this book and couldn't stop talking about it to. pollan also wrote second nature: a gardener's education, which is one of my favorite non-fiction books. he is a lyrical but plainspoken and clear writer, exactly what i want out of a non-fiction writer. i'm not quite halfway through, but i would recommend this book to you. yes, you. go get it now.

we have everything for our feast-for-two tomorrow, though a feast-for-two that will leave us with tons of leftovers. are you going to be hungry around noon tomorrow? you should come to our house.

la nostra pasqua:

it's not quite easter since we are not quite religious, but it's not quite anything else. in italy i learned the phrase natale con i suoi, pasqua con qui vuoi, or roughly: christmas with your family, easter with whoever you want. i always think of easter as a sort of disorganized, informal feast. but hey, any excuse to try a new roasting recipe...

il nostro agnellino da new zealand:

mmm. you know you want it.
