I just got one, but thanks for offering!

What a great marketing ploy--"you can't have one unless someone invites you." Makes one all eager to get them when it's offered.

exactly, genius stuff. the downside is when i feel like a total asshole handing them out! ha. thanks, google. "don't be evil" indeed. i seriously doubt they will ever offer it to the general public, and it will just keep spreading like some kind of hipster herpes simplex through the entire community of techies and other uber-cool, bleeding-edge demographics. although with each user inviting a further 2-6 users, it's got to have reached everyone who wants one by now, right? i guess the general public will have to be convinced, when the time comes, that it is normal for email to look like gmail and not like hotmail, or yahoo (my alma mater), with the eight million blinking ads sandwiched into every available niche of the screen. i am a big fan of the text-only ads on gmail. words! words to be skimmed! ♥
