vote!

i voted this morning. have you voted yet today? where will you go? check your state, is your employer required to give you time off to vote? go! make time! you'll be very glad you did.

.

on sunday we saw the giant election-night celebration stage for kerry/edwards, which takes up all of copley square and has the boston public library as a backdrop. beautiful. apparently there are metal detectors & invites etc, but i wish i could crash that party, despite the possible rain, despite the freezing cold, despite the fact that it is an odd thought to think of grown adults weeping openly in the streets. in joy or fear. my stomach is in knots and i want to stay away from the online news today. i'm superstitious.

hello to you too, lovely. don't drown! take a deep breath and float!

i am pouring every single positive thought i have into this day. i bet tonight will be exhausting, watching results come in. all the networks keep saying "as long as it takes" and similar, which is just tiring to think of. and it's as close as it was last time, too. sigh.

hurrah for early-vote states!

i for one am displeased with massachusetts, which has stupid connect-the-arrows ballots, versus my native oregon, which had lovely vote-by-mail laws that meant no lines, no hassles on election day. sigh.

at least there is no electronic voting here. some of the problems i've read about online today are not promising. disenfranchisement, here we come! courtesy of the computer revolution.

today i voted in a big box with a curtain and was much less satisfied than when i voted with a touch screen computer. somehow the CLUNK did not prove to me that i had voted as much as a "thank you" popping up on a screen did in previous years. i was thinking how this shows i am of a different generation than say people over 30 that probably feel exactly the opposite.

in general i am very much in favor of electronic voting, but i think this election is too soon, because of the terrible security flaws that have been revealed in the vast majority of systems being used this year. if it is paper-verifiable, voter-auditable, then i'm all for it. the idea of thousands of tiny counties running elections with armies of 80 year old women and then being given computer systems----that just scares me. there is already so much room for disenfranchisement.

bah. have i told you every time i look at your kerry/edwards icon, it makes me smile? so adorable.

it is a happy icon. happy happy. if they do not win they will frown. then it will be sad.
