today we went rollerskating! at roller world in saugus. not having touched a pair of skates in oh, a decade? it was hard! hard on the ankles, hard on the shins; but very fun. we laughed and held hands and went around and around, flailing arms, resting every three laps or so. we were pretty okay at it, after a while. i didn't fall, though k did a few times. sometimes just, you know, rolling along i thought to myself, i'm rollerskating and the thought cracked me up, especially when a swarm of flexible little children would zoom past us on their rollerblades.

now i want my own skates, lightweight and tight and more supportive than the beat-up rink rentals. the thought of how much work it would take to go from total novice to roller-derby-try-out-worthy is laughable, but it's a fun thought. in any case it's more fun than walking to the beach for exercise!

when's the last time you went rollerskating?

When I was a freshman in college, a bunch of us went once, definitely the oldest folks at the rink. Otherwise, though, I don't think I've been since I was 12ish. Skating was a passion back in the day though -- there was little else to do in our tiny town but go the the skating rink on Friday night (as a preteen) and Saturday morning (as a younger kid). Tight-rolled jeans, too-big t-shirts, and permed hair. Is it actually possible to roller skate when not dressed like that?

there was a great rink near where i lived in oregon, but boy do i remember those outfits from the ice skating rink when i lived in connecticut. wow. but today all the kids had, like, juicy couture sweats on and looked pretty awesome. which was how it should be, i guess, since they were kicking our asses.

hello...
hmm i guess it was jr high sometime?
i loved rollerskating around the neighborhood but the rinks were too much for me.
i had the kind of skates you fit your own shoe on top and they buckle over.
i always wanted some of those fuzzy pompoms for my skates!

i had fisher price skates like that! over the sneakers, and they were expandable. i wish i'd had the awesome kind with a skate key. skate keys are so cool.

When I was about 8, I got my own skates for my birthday. They were white leather lace-up things, and they had unicorns on the sides! And a baby blue carrying bag that also had a unicorn on it. I was totally into unicorns.

i lived in these apartment at my school last year, they were new, and to go with them they built a huge train station that went to nyc right across the way. this included a HUGe parking deck. i stole my lesbian roommate's rollerblades (who i was fighting with at the time which is why i had to steal them, otherwise i would have asked) and my friend and i went skating all around that deck. it was scary. but i guess that wasn't rollerskating. i do have a bicycle now that i ride frequently. and the experience is just the same as rollerskating when you haven't done it in a while. all the hills in my town kick my ass daily on that bike.

aw. a poor tiny heidi stuck on the rink! that image is simultaneously adorable and sad!

there was a birthday party there while we were skating, i noticed only one or two of them actually skated, the rest of the time was spent in the arcade and at the snack bar. aside from the rollerblading kids, i think roller skating is a lost art among kids these days.

my grandpa was a hockey nut and taught us all how to skate (on hockey skates, naturally, none of those girly white boots for us, though i coveted them madly) before we were six. i think my brother had wee little hockey skates when he was barely four! but anyway, the last time i skated with him was maybe three or four years ago (back when he was a little less insane) and i still remembered how to do it! all i know is that i sure picked it up easier than i picked up roller skating yesterday. ice is more forgiving than a rink floor, i think.

wow! i read in an article that the boston derby dames just recently split off from the providence crowd. i should quit being a wuss and just email the boston team and ask about it. i'm just scared they'll say, awesome, practice is this weekend! rawk! and then i'll cry in my cheerios (c.f. wussitude) and not go.
