in and on my mind today:
  • taleggio cheese (stracchino in disguise!)
  • the bananas at home are still too green to eat.
  • rollerskating rollerskating rollerskating!
  • i am so glad the stupid olympics are over.
  • it was 8°F when we left the house, barely more than that now, counting windchill.
  • new sopranos season starts march 12!
  • last night: a convincing dream about time-travel.
  • i am very tired of listening to the upstairs neighbors fighting.
  • must must must get some real work accomplished today.

also, on the subway this morning i saw, for the second time, a depressing sight. a middle-aged woman, average and with an oddly soft face, she messily spills over onto two or three seats with her over-filled bag and both times she was eating, also messily. career clothes and sensible sneakers. she sits and takes out a sad purple dimestore journal and dr. phil's "the relationship rescue workbook". she writes a little and flips back and forth through the book on the long train ride in. it makes me a little sad -- to see her pursue this haphazard solution while obviously distracted, hemmed in by strangers. i wish i could send her an anonymous, visual postcard of herself. she seems like a caricature of 'modern career woman' - all the tasks crammed into her commute but no attention or grace to any of them.

ah, good idea. we have them on a banana hook and in front of a sunny window --- though this morning i realized they were special organic bananas and ate one. it was still green outside but nicely ripe inside. so it may just be an odd varietal! but thanks for the tip :)

i heard some wacky things about the opening & closing ceremonies. i know there is a LOT of symbolism to cram in there, but sometimes it's just a little too much. the cheese is unbearable. also, the sheer media noise about usa's underperforming/asshole/drunk athletes was so incredibly boring. gosh! athletes are human! athletes don't always treat the olympics as sacred ground! who the fuck cares? the media was obsessed with it because all their media cronies were obsessed with it --- one of those things where the coverage seemed amped beyond any reasonable expectation of the audience's possible attention span.

i never saw the geena davis show, though i know heather havrilesky wrote semi-favorably about it. i have to say, my heart only ever has room for one network drama liberal wetdream president, and that's president bartlett! whose show, alas, i haven't seen in years. but i loved it when i watched it obsessively, senior year at smith. i have to say the most interest media commentaries on geena davis were on how the show seemed to be buttering up primetime viewers for the possibility of hillary clinton's run in 2008.
