last night after we had turned out the lights i was seized with a deep need to find:

1)

a kenner family tree house, and

2)

the woodsey squirrel family log home.

kirk went to get my laptop and watched while i looked them up.

memories of the tree house elevator were just stuck in my brain, though i couldn't recall all the details until i looked it up. but the button that makes the treetop pop up! oh. and the painted-on hanging plants that looked just like ours! and the feel of the woodsey squirrels' little brown chairs! and you could put your fingers in their sleeves, like little puppets. they came with a storybook, "lightning strikes twice," which terrified me. i don't know what ever happened to all this stuff -- i suspect my mother gave most of it away to her church, if it wasn't destroyed already by my siblings.

oh, toys.

[ oh my god! i remember those tree houses! i had one. do you remember sylvanian families? i saw them in a toy store the other day. it's so weird, all the toys of my childhood seem to be having a resurgence -- my little ponies, care bears, cabbage patch kids, strawberry shortcake etc. so bizarre. i want to know when they're going to bring back rainbow brite! ]

i never had the sylvanian family guys, though i thought they were totally awesome. to the max.

you know, kirk and i will sometimes go into toystores for the express purpose of finding toys we used to have that have been totally updated and sluttified (most of my doll characters) or updated and safeified (most of his toys which were metal are now made in plastic, etc). and then we grumble to ourselves and leave, feeling thoroughly old.

rainbow brite is already back, think! not as much as strawberry shortcake, though. she's everywhere!

[ i had a strawberry shortcake doll where you'd squeeze her tummy and she blew strawberry scented kisses. i bet those brats today don't get that! speaking of brats, don't even start me on those bratz dolls. i'm going off on a tangent, i know, but they make me so fucking angry! argh! they're so vile. my little pony has made quite the massive comeback -- i saw an entire bloody aisle of them in target the other day. spiderman, of course, is also big again, being as the third film is about to be released. travis is obsessed with spiderman, which is proof of his appeal, i guess, independent of tobey maguire and co, being as he's way too young to see or understand any of the films. having said that, i saw a trailer for the third one the other day and it intrigued me. it looks nice and dark -- the psyche of spiderman, of sorts. i just wish they'd dump kirsten dunst. she annoys me too. but at least bryce dallas howard is in it, even if her gorgeous red hair is gone. which annoys me. which is probably leading you to ask: "who and what doesn't annoy you, heidi?" ;) ]

i totally agree with you on the bratz...they are pretty disgusting to me, though their wild popularity seems pretty predictable. i remember a couple years ago in a doctor's office i was flipping through a magazine that had children modelling ralph lauren or guess clothing in it? and someone had scrawled over it in sharpie, STOP SEXUALIZING CHILDREN. and it was true, they were kind of sexualized in a way. i always think of that when i see bratz in the stores.

i can't wait for the new spiderman! i have been a huge fan of the franchise, though i also agree that kirsten dunst is only so-so in it. but i had forgotten bryce dallas howard is in this one!! oh boy. i don't know much about the dark spiderman storyline, but kirk really digs it. i think we will go see it this weekend! we have a bunch of free tickets saved up.
