reading painted shadow: the life of vivienne eliot, first wife of t.s. eliot.

vivienne compulsively stole sheets at the many hotels she stayed in with tom, sometimes but not always because she had stained them with menstrual blood. she would send the sheets back by rail to her maid, who would launder and post them back to the hotel. "tom went mad." later she became attached to the idea of black sheets and pillows, and black silk pyjamas.

"it takes two to make a horribly dysfunctional grand high modernist marriage" is what my Modern British Poetry prof said about that couple.

god, so true. i really admire the author's aim to resurrect her image, but i'm not entirely sure that she succeeded. she is just not that stellar of a biographer. i keep seeing parts where she inadvertently uses language that includes value judgements, or assumes without illustrating her assumptions.

basically i am in lurrrrrrrrrrrrve with hermione lee and all other biographers look bad in comparison!
