our hotel looked out on a pearl that slashed through a fog.
we were told the city had a mountain

but that winter week, clouds lay low enough to let any house
with empty eyes loom up against the two pm dusk,

walls kneeling down beneath the dense sky.
when we walked we threw no shadow.

we slept awash in the cool static hum
of this city, where geese paraded

all day in their paleness down the emptied streets.
