two things:

1. kirk bought a timer that will allow us to plug in the crockpot in the morning and have it start up hours later. this is exciting, as currently we are out of the house for 12+ hours each day. even on "low" that's quite the overdone pot roast.

2. battlestar galactica is the best show on television right now. also currently watching: lost, vanished, the nine. it's not even about regular tv versus sci fi -- i really think it's the best acting, best writing, best plot (bonus: best social commentary). it beats the pants off of everything else i've seen so far this season.

We bought a crockpot last year, but we don't use it much, except for making barbeque, which it's awesome for! Might be a good time to get it out again, though, as we are also away alot -- Conan's been coming home and making big nice meals for me.

Abouth a month ago, we (well, Conan) invested in Tivo, and it's been one of the coolest silly things we've bought ever, because we have very little time to watch tv during the week, but now on the weekend there's all this stuff waiting for us, which is especially great as we have no energy to do anything outside of the house anyway...

we use it for very boring pot roasts, but they are so so so good. just fall-apart tender meat in juice, with vegetables. so simple and so satisfying! i was given a crock pot along with some treasured family crock pot recipes a few years back :)

hooray for tivo! we record everything, too (just a regular comcast dvr, no fancy "bee-boop" noises). especially since everything is on at 9 and 10, and that is just sadly too late for my bedtime. plus, commercials are so beyond aggravating these days (esp with the gubernatorial race here) that i want to stab my eyes out. so yes, i love the fast forward! are you and c watching battlestar galactica?

Our other crockpot recipes have mostly been mediocre -- I used actual crockpot recipes, for stews and things, but they still always seem to watery and/or unflavored (which'd make sense if I was trying to use conventional recipes in the crockpot). Mm, we should try a pot roast though.

Oddly enough (considering other tv interests), I've never watched it. Dont know if C has or not, but we aren't currently.

our cheapo crockpot recipe book usually requires use of a packet of dry onion soup mixture with one cup or water, etc. it sounds gross but usually tastes pretty good! that's how the pot roast is, so it's a wet roast, not a dry one.

i've never made an actual stew...i would think that would be hard since there is zero moisture escape while it's cooking. stews sort of need to be reduced, yes? hmm. when we make the wet/pot roast thing, the meat is so tender and juicy that we don't really eat it as a stew, just pour the juice over as gravy and discard the rest.

Hmm, maybe we should try that. Yes, the stew-like recipes never call for much liquid, but it just seems like any liquid is too much, like they don't take on flavor they way they ought. I assumed that the fact that they were "crockpot recipes" meant that some genius had figured out how to get past that whole reduction thing, but perhaps not.
